Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th of July saw this year's Old Buckenham Airshow and once again the branch was in attendance. This year was to be slightly different as the Branch President and his colleague had their WWII (1944) Royal Air Force forward air controller living history / reenactment display set up at the show, and we were able to place the branch stand alongside it. This put us in a prime position besides the War Memorial and Museum, just behind the viewing line.
Unfortunately the weather was not so advantageous. After weeks of glorious sunshine the weather broke big time on the Friday before the show with some splendid thunder storms arriving overhead along with high winds and torrential rain. An interesting night for those camped on site no doubt.
Saturday dawned with a few showers but these soon cleared to leave a sunny, warm if not slightly breezy day for the first day of the airshow. The crowds were out in force, as were the branch team for an action packed flying display, and overall enjoyable day.
Sunday however was quite different. The high winds and rain returned with the obvious effect on the planned flying programme and visitor numbers. The pilots that did get airborne put on the best display that the conditions allowed but the site soon started to empty once the reduced flying display ended.
Overall the weekend resulted in over £600 raised for the RAF Benevolent Fund, a great effort by all involved in what were challenging conditions at times. One can only imagine what the total may have been with better conditions on Sunday but that's a British summer for you.
